The Vera Institute of Justice, is a private, non-profit organization that combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera’s Substance Use and Mental Health Research Program (SUMH) aims to reduce justice system contact for people with substance use and mental health issues. Program staff conduct original research on the multiple needs of criminal justice involved populations and use evaluation methods to test new approaches to providing services for people with substance use and mental health issues.
Responsibilities:
SUMH seeks an enthusiastic and motivated individual to work as a Research Associate on a variety of research studies. The Research Associate will join a team of researchers working on studies of jail reentry, the utilization of health and welfare services, and interventions to improve data sharing between government criminal justice and behavioral health agencies. The Research Associate will also contribute to expanding the program’s portfolio of research projects, with a particular emphasis on mental health needs among underserved communities, including ethnic minorities and women. Specific responsibilities include:
-Working with large administrative data sets.
-Conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis.
-Report and grant writing.
-Conducting literature reviews on various topics related to the program's work.
-Liaising with government agencies and nonprofit partners.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a graduate degree, or equivalent experience, in sociology, social work, psychology, public policy, or a closely related discipline and a familiarity with social science research methods. The ideal candidate will have experience conducting research in the areas of criminal justice, mental health, substance use and/or treatment services. Individuals with some direct service experience in one or more of these areas are strongly encouraged to apply.
Position requirements include:
-Research training and/or experience conducting social science research, including knowledge of program evaluation and research design, and experience in quantitative data analysis using SPSS or other statistical software.
-An understanding of the mental health and substance use needs of diverse populations.
-Excellent writing and communication skills.
-Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a range of stakeholders, including high level criminal justice practitioners and community service providers.
-Ability to manage work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently.
-Grant writing and/or fundraising experience preferred.
-Willingness to travel.
Preferred skills include:
-Experience working in mental health, substance use, criminal justice, or related fields.
-Working knowledge of mental health assessment and diagnosis.
-Experience with qualitative research methods and analysis, including focus groups and/or semi-structured interviews with vulnerable populations, high level criminal justice practitioners, and community-based organizations
-Fluency in Spanish is a plus
